Mathematics Program
Ekya’s engaging Math program, based on the Singapore Math Methodology, develops a positive attitude towards numbers. Students develop a deep understanding of concepts, enabling them to solve problems creatively and confidently. Building upon a strong foundation, the Senior School program deepens critical thinking through advanced exploration, preparing them for future academic challenges. Through a blend of conceptual understanding and practical applications, we empower students to become mathematically proficient and confident lifelong learners, ready to tackle real-world problems.
Learning Area Purpose
The Mathematics Program equips learners to:
- Develop mathematical thinking and attitude.
- Use mathematical processes for problem-solving.
- Engage in mathematical challenges and discussions.
- Understand the relevance and need for mathematics in the real world.
Key Learning Experiences
Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) Progression
This three-step learning process begins with concrete experiences using physical objects, moves to pictorial representations, and transitions to abstract symbols and numbers.
- Develops strong conceptual understanding by linking tangible experiences to abstract ideas.
- Makes learning more intuitive and less reliant on rote memorisation.
- Encourages deep understanding through hands-on, concrete experiences.
- Helps students to move from concrete to abstract representations of mathematical concepts.
Focus on Mastery
Emphasises in-depth understanding of fewer mathematical concepts, allowing students to master each topic before moving on.
- Build a strong foundation in essential math skills.
- Reduce the need for reteaching through effective reinforcement.
- Foster confidence to tackle complex math challenges.
- Engage learners with dynamic activities that promote skill mastery.
Visualisation and Problem-Solving Techniques
Our curriculum employs tools such as bar modelling and number bonds to assist students in visualising mathematical relationships and systematically solving problems.
- Students skills in tackling complex, multi-step problems are enhanced.
- Clear visual strategies are provided for effective problem-solving.
- A deeper understanding of mathematical concepts is fostered.
- Confidence in problem-solving abilities is boosted.
Tools in the Mathematics Classroom
In Ekya we use mathematical tools like Math Manipulatives (physical and virtual), Error Analysis, and Critique, Correct, and Clarify to enhance students’ understanding and engagement in mathematics.
- Math Manipulatives (Physical and Virtual): Hands-on and visual tools that make maths concepts tangible and accessible.
- Error Analysis: A method for examining incorrect solutions, fostering critical thinking and understanding of common mistakes.
- Critique, Correct, and Clarify: A collaborative approach that involves peer evaluation and constructive feedback to enhance understanding.
